In the year 2008-2009, the Section had achieved several great achievements in the area of ICT professional development. The Section had successfully organized the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2008: Best Professional Development Award, and the BCS first Mentorship Programme for ICT students in Hong Kong, namely BCS Mentorship Programme 2008-09.
The Hong Kong ICT Awards 2008: Best Professional Development Award was successfully held by the Section, and fully supported by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, HKSAR Government. The Grand Award ceremony was held on 9 Feb 2009, officiated by The Honourable John C. Tsang, JP, Financial Secretary of HKSAR Government. Ten companies and institutions were awarded in three category streams, which were Best Professional Development (Scheme) Award, Best Professional Development (Products) Award and Best Professional Development (Services) Award. The winner of Grand Award in Best Professional Development Award was Cisco Systems (HK) Ltd., with the entry “Cisco Networking Academy Program in Hong Kong”. The BCS Mentorship Programme 2008-09 is the first mentorship programme organized by BCS Hong Kong Section. The characteristic of the programme is “career oriented”, the objectives are to help the students who are studying in ICT related subjects in universities or territory institutions to understand more about the real world in ICT industry while they are studying or at the first year of working, therefore they can have better planning for their career path. There were 82 mentees had joined the six months programme, and it was our honor that we have 29 senior executives in the ICT industry and chairmen of IT professional associations, to join as our mentors. The opening ceremony of the programme was held on 3 Dec 2008 at HKPC, with over 150 guests attended, the closing ceremony was held on 19 June 2009, and it was our honor to have Dr. Hon. Samson Tam, JP, Legislative Councillor (ITFC), to present the certificates to every mentees during the ceremony. We would like request our members to offer support and helping hand to develop this new annual programme - the BCS mentorship programme.
The BCS Mentorship Programme organized by the Hong Kong Section also received high recognization from the BCS Headquarter. Which was the first mentorship programme organized by BCS worldwide under the YPG Young Professional Group of BCS. The Section had successfully organized the Section’s Annual Dinner on 29 May 2009 with over 220 members and friends attended. It was our honor to have Dr. Cheung Nim Kwan, CEO of ASTRI delivered a very interesting and insightful speech to the attendees of the dinner. We believe our annual dinner would become one of the major annual activities for ICT professionals in the future.
In the area of member services, the Section successfully organized many activities for members, which include visits to ifc building and its control center, a wine tasting networking hours - Meet the ICT Industry Leaders, a technical Seminar - Ethical Hacking and Computer Forensic Investigation. BCS also exhibited in the ICT Expo 2009 and co-organized the 2008 LegCo Election Forum for the IT Functional Constituency. The Section also actively participated and supported to over 20 ICT events and activities in the past year.
Thanks so much to the devotion and effort of the Committee Members and the support from the Members of the Section, we have successfully organized many great events for the members and the ICT industry in Hong Kong.
