This seminar touches on an area that deserves more attention than it has received so far. Usability refers to the extent to which any product (such as a software system or website) supports its users in carrying out their tasks efficiently and effectively. Usability is therefore an important element to the quality of the products produced by our software industry. Quality, in turn, is one crucial factor in the industry's drive to compete locally as well as internationally. Three seasoned practitioners in usability will substantiate the importance of usability, share their experiences gained from various usability projects, and reveal the techniques and tools at their disposal.

The first presentation will provide an introduction to usability. It will touch on the various techniques and tools used in usability analysis, design, and evaluation. It will also present some indicators of poor usability and emphasize on the importance of simplicity. A case study will be then presented with a prediction of the development trend of usability. The second presentation will focus on user behavior. It will highlight the relationship between knowing the users and getting the products right. The same users may think differently when performing the same task and the ability to perform a task is affected by the context. It will argue that knowledge of user behavior is vital to the success of a product. The third presentation will discuss the cost-benefits of usability. First it will address the misconception that usability increases development cost and show how, in fact, usability engineering reduces development cost and time. Consequently, a product can still meet its market window even if usability is addressed in the development. It will also be shown how usability not only provides short-term benefits on development savings, but that it provides increased returns on investment by creating products that gain greater market acceptance.
